Model S/X 2012-2020 - Drive Unit Revision
Description
Model S/X 2012-2020 - drive unit repair and revision.
Do you drive a Tesla Model S (2012–2020) or Model X (up to 2020) with a Large Drive Unit (LDU)? Then the information below is important to you.
The problem
The LDU has an internal seal that almost always leaks over time. This is not a question of if, but of when.
- Consequences of leakage: coolant enters the drive unit.
- Signals: a whining noise at low speed, error codes (including BMS_f151, BMS_w151, BMS_w142, BMS_f071, BMS_w071, BMS_f072, BMS_w072, BMS_u029) and even the car stalling.
When these complaints occur, the damage is often already too great.
The solution: Coolant Delete
Prevention is better than cure. With a Coolant Delete modification, the weak seal is removed and adjusted so that leakage can no longer occur in the future.
- Preventative: no more coolant in the engine.
- Sustainable: prevents expensive repairs afterwards.
- Optional: replacement of rotor bearings, recommended when noise is already audible at low speed.
When revision is necessary
Does your car already have error codes or noticeable noises? Then it is usually too late for just a Coolant Delete. In that case, we replace the drive unit with a used or fully remanufactured engine.
For which models?
- All Model S with rear-wheel drive
- Model S/X Performance with four-wheel drive
Non-Performance four-wheel drive models have a different type of engine and are not affected by this problem.
